How to get started
Finding a certified coach is the first step to beginning your equestrian journey and it’s important to ensure you (or your child) are learning from a certified coach. Having Certified Coach Status signifies that the coach is trained, has passed background checks, has Coach Insurance coverage, and other safety and training requirements.
A list of certified active coaches across Canada can also be found in Equestrian Canada’s national coaching database.
Under the guidance of a certified coach you can reach your equestrian goals through personalized training plans and up-to-date learning programs and materials.
Island Horse Council (IHC) administers and promotes coaching programs in partnership with the Coaching Association of Canada National Coaching Certification Program and Equestrian Canada (EC). The Equestrian Coaching Program includes the disciplines of English and Western.
There are three types of Certified Coaches:
Instructor
• Specializes in the instruction of children and adults learning to ride, establishing foundational riding skills with an eye on safety.
Competition Coach
• Introduces riders to the competitive sport environment. More advanced skills in the development of a competitive training program, performance analysis and mental preparation for competition are required to become certified at this level.
Competition Coach Specialist (CCS)
• Has a discipline specialty and is developing riders competing at the provincial and national levels. These coaches have more in-depth knowledge of developing training plans for athletes and require a working knowledge of the Equestrian Canada competition rules for the level and discipline they’re teaching.
